Not every UFO report is the same kind of mystery
CUFOS separates reports by observation conditions and evidence type: lights at night, objects seen in daylight, radar-visual cases, close encounters and more unusual historical clusters. The Free Zone turns that into a practical reading layer for visitors: what was seen, how it was recorded, what can fool the observer, and what would make the case stronger.
The goal is not to make the archive colder. It is to make the mystery sharper.
Nocturnal lights
Reports dominated by luminous points, formations or moving lights after dark. They are common, dramatic and also vulnerable to aircraft, satellites, planets, balloons and camera exposure effects.
- Strong when
- Multiple observers, motion data, duration, direction, weather and sky position are recorded.
- Watch for
- Starlink trains, flares, drones, aircraft approaches, Venus and lens artifacts.
Daylight objects
Structured objects seen in daylight: discs, ovals, cigars, spheres or irregular shapes. These cases become stronger when distance, angular size and independent references can be estimated.
- Strong when
- Clear horizon, known landmarks, corroborating photos or sensor data.
- Watch for
- Balloons, birds, insects near lens, aircraft reflections and atmospheric mirage.
Radar plus visual
Cases where an object is reportedly seen and also tracked by radar or another sensor. These are not automatically extraordinary, but they deserve careful separation of instrument behavior and witness account.
- Strong when
- Sensor logs, operator notes, timestamps and independent visual reports line up.
- Watch for
- Clutter, anomalous propagation, calibration issues and track merging.
Close encounters
Near-field reports add physical proximity, terrain, witnesses, effects or occupants. They can be culturally powerful, but need especially clear handling because testimony and interpretation easily fuse.
- Strong when
- Site traces, medical records, independent witnesses or rapid documentation exist.
- Watch for
- Memory drift, folklore contamination, hoaxes and ambiguous physical evidence.
Black triangles
Large triangular or delta-shaped craft reports often involve slow movement, silent flight and bright corner lights. They sit at the crossroads of witness psychology, aircraft secrecy and genuine unknowns.
- Strong when
- Size estimate has fixed references and flight path is documented.
- Watch for
- Aircraft formations, stealth aircraft, drones and light-pattern illusions.
Historical combat lights
World War II aircrews reported strange lights pacing aircraft. The category matters because it shows that aerial anomalies predate the modern flying-saucer era.
- Strong when
- Mission records, crew reports and unit history converge.
- Watch for
- Combat stress, enemy technology rumors, St. Elmo’s fire and misread flak or tracer effects.
Ghost rockets
Post-war Scandinavian reports described rocket-like objects and aerial streaks. Their value is historical: they bridge wartime technology anxiety and later UFO reporting waves.
- Strong when
- Trajectory, impact claims and official investigation notes exist.
- Watch for
- Meteors, military tests, rumor propagation and newspaper amplification.
Natural comparisons
Some phenomena imitate mystery: ball lightning, sprites, meteors, mirages and unusual cloud illumination. A serious archive keeps these near the UFO material instead of hiding them.
- Strong when
- Weather, geology, astronomy and atmospheric data are checked early.
- Watch for
- Over-filtering: explaining away a report before the record is complete.
Nocturnal lights
Start with time, direction, duration, formation, sky conditions and camera exposure. This class is common, but it becomes interesting when the light behavior survives basic astronomy, satellite and aircraft checks.

- Each future dossier can carry a visible type tag: NL, DD, RV, CE, TRI or historical cluster.
- Footage can be ranked by source class: official, institutional, creator-verified or community-submitted.
- Infographics should explain uncertainty instead of decorating around it.
- Strong non-official footage can enter the archive only with provenance, metadata and review notes.
